We have set up our own investigations into germination. Some people are investigating the effect of different amounts of water on seeds; Some are looking at different amounts of light; Some have even changed the liquid the seeds are given!

We all had a great day at the Shepherd Wheel. After lunch in Endcliffe Park, we made our way to Bingham Park. Keith and Stuart showed us how the water wheel works and they explained what life would have been like for grinders over 100 years ago. Men and boys (from the age of 8) worked in dangerous conditions and often died by the age of 35. Ask your child how dust and metal would have been removed from eyes!
We found out why people settled in Sheffield and the importance of the rivers in the development of the steel city.
We walked for over 6 miles yesterday! It was worth it!
In science on Monday, we collected pollen from two different flowers and compared them using the microscopes. We thought the pollen would be round in shape but it was actually more like a grain of rice.
We were also surprised by the daffodil pollen. We didn’t think we had got any but, when we looked under the microscope, there were lots of small, very pale grains.
On Wednesday last week, Iwan and Emily from Sheffield University came to tell us about their work in the field of biomedical research. They explained to us how studying fish and flies is helping people to develop medical techniques for humans! They brought in fish and flies for us to look at and taught us about how their genes are very similar to those of a human.
We then invented our own fish and flies based on different gene strings.
